Vermentino 2023
Our first ever straight Vermentino.
We planted this over at the Wabash Avenue Vineyard in 2015. Our initial harvests were kept deliberately light, 2018-2022 were too light to be able to produce a stand-alone, so we would blend the resultant wine into our Falanghina to create our Sierra Donna blend. 2023 was the first year we allowed our Vermentino to produce enough fruit to bottle straight.
In Italy, Vermentino is the dominant white varietal grown on the island of Sardinia. There is about 100 acres of this varietal grown in California, so not very much. We have just under half an acre here in Chicago Park.
Vermentino is often (favorably) compared to Sauvignon Blanc. Sure, I guess. They are both white wines. I find Vermentino, including ours, to be a lot more complex and interesting. There is tropical and citrus fruit on the nose, good body (not too light, not too heavy). Where Vermentino really shines is in the nutty, almost green almond finish. As with all of our 2023 vintage wines, we were able to harvest this fruit fully ripe at moderately lower sugar levels, resulting in a 12.3% wine. Only 80 cases produced.
