I take my inspiration for our first ever Montepulciano from the wines produced in the Rosso Conero region of Marche. While Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is better known, I prefer the leaner, tighter styling of Rosso Conero vs the more opulent, fruit forward wines of Abruzzo.

Legend has it that during his invasion of the Italian peninsula in the second century BC, Hannibal plied both his troops and his horses with Montepulciano wine. There is even a wine produced in Abruzzo called “Vinum Hannibal”, although why any self-respecting Italiani would name their wine after a Carthaginian is a mystery to me (Cato the Elder would be dismayed).
